Medicare Part A Coverage

Hospital coverage is the foundation of Medicare — but it is far from complete on its own.

Medicare Part A is your hospital insurance. It covers inpatient stays, skilled nursing facility care after a qualifying hospital admission, some home health services and hospice. For most people in Middle Tennessee, Part A is premium-free because they or a spouse paid Medicare taxes for at least 40 quarters.

Premium-free does not mean cost-free. Part A carries a per-benefit-period deductible, daily coinsurance after day 60, and steep coinsurance in a skilled nursing facility after day 20. A single extended hospitalization can produce a bill that surprises families who assumed Medicare paid everything.

Problems we hear every week

'Free' coverage still has a deductible

The Part A deductible applies per benefit period — not per year — so two separate hospitalizations can trigger it twice.

Rehab stays run out fast

Skilled nursing coinsurance kicks in on day 21 and climbs quickly, which is where many Middle Tennessee families feel the real cost.

Delaying enrollment can backfire

If you are not drawing Social Security, Part A does not start automatically. Late or missed enrollment creates paperwork headaches and coverage gaps.

How we solve it

1

Confirm your eligibility and start date

We verify your work credits, your automatic-enrollment status and the exact date your hospital coverage begins.

2

Fill the hospital gaps

A Medicare Supplement or Advantage plan absorbs the deductible and daily coinsurance.

3

Coordinate with employer coverage

Still working past 65? We compare your group plan against Part A and B so you don't pay twice or lose creditable coverage.

FAQ

Part A questions we answer often

Is Medicare Part A really free?+

The monthly premium is $0 for most people with 40 quarters of Medicare-taxed work. The deductibles and coinsurance are not free, which is why supplemental coverage matters.

Do I need Part A if I have employer insurance?+

Often yes, since premium-free Part A can coordinate with an employer plan. If you contribute to an HSA, enrolling in Part A stops those contributions — we review that carefully before you file.

What is a benefit period?+

It begins the day you are admitted and ends after 60 consecutive days out of a hospital or skilled nursing facility. A new admission after that starts a new deductible.

Does Part A cover long-term nursing home care?+

No. Part A covers short-term skilled care after a qualifying hospital stay. Ongoing custodial care is not covered by Medicare, which is where TennCare Medicaid or private planning comes in.
