Turning 65 Health Insurance Planning

One appointment, a clear checklist, and every deadline handled before it becomes a penalty.

Turning 65 starts a seven-month Initial Enrollment Period: the three months before your birthday month, the month itself, and the three months after. What you do inside that window determines your premiums, your penalty exposure and — critically — your one guaranteed chance to buy a Medicare Supplement without health questions.

We sit down with people three to six months out. By the end of the first conversation you will know whether to enroll now or delay, what your monthly cost will look like, and which direction fits your doctors and prescriptions. Then we do the paperwork with you.

Problems we hear every week

Still working and unsure whether to delay

Whether employer coverage is creditable depends on employer size and plan type — getting it wrong creates lifetime penalties.

The phone calls never stop

Turning 65 puts you on every marketing list in the country, and the pressure makes it hard to think clearly.

The health-question window is easy to waste

Miss your Medigap open enrollment and a future health event may make a Supplement unavailable at any price.

How we solve it

1

A dated timeline

We give you a written schedule of what to do and when, keyed to your actual birthday and retirement date.

2

Employer coverage analysis

We compare your group plan's true cost and benefits against Medicare so delaying is a decision, not a default.

3

One point of contact

You get a local advisor's cell number instead of a rotating call center.

Ready to see your options?

A review takes about twenty minutes, costs nothing, and ends with real numbers instead of a sales pitch.

What you gain

  • Zero late-enrollment penalties
  • Full use of your one-time guaranteed-issue Supplement window
  • A budget you can plan retirement around
  • An end to the daily sales calls and mailers

FAQ

Turning 65 questions we answer often

When exactly should I call?+

Three to six months before your 65th birthday. Earlier is fine; later gets rushed.

I'm still working at 65 — do I need Medicare?+

If your employer has 20 or more employees and offers creditable coverage, you can usually delay Part B penalty-free. Smaller employers usually require Medicare as primary.

Does Medicare start automatically?+

Only if you are already drawing Social Security. Otherwise you must enroll yourself, and we walk you through it.

How much does a plan cost at 65?+

It depends on the path you choose. Advantage plans are often $0 premium plus Part B; a Supplement plus Part D is a higher fixed monthly cost with lower usage costs. We quote both.
